Challenge:
As part of Autodesk Research, the Technology Centers operated as a semi-autonomous, cross-border division focused on prototyping, product innovation, and industry research. With teams based in both the U.S. and Canada—and a complex, public-facing residency program—communication lacked consistency across locations, programs, and internal documentation. I identified the need for a dedicated style guide that would align with Autodesk’s broader voice while clarifying internal nomenclature, residency messaging, and region-specific terminology.
Approach:
As a core member of the Technology Centers communications team, I initiated and led the development of a style guide that served our unique operational and editorial needs. I partnered with stakeholders across research, operations, design, and community engagement to shape the guide’s content and structure. My process included:
Auditing internal and external content to identify inconsistencies in tone, structure, and terminology
Reviewing the Autodesk global style guide to ensure alignment while building in team-specific guidelines
Drafting clear, modular sections covering writing style, brand voice, Slack best practices, and internal/external messaging standards
Clarifying language around the residency program, including naming conventions, role descriptions, and participant messaging
Creating addenda on inclusive language and global-ready localization, addressing cross-border nuances between U.S. and Canadian locations
Outcome:
The guide became a foundational resource for communications across the Technology Centers. It:
Improved clarity and consistency in messaging for the residency program, research documentation, and external partnerships
Reduced confusion around U.S./Canada terminology differences and internal workflows
Became a go-to onboarding resource for new team members and program participants
Aligned with Autodesk’s global standards while supporting the specific needs of a unique, R&D-focused division
Skills Used:
Content strategy & editorial systems
Inclusive language & localization
Voice, tone & platform-specific guidelines
Cross-functional collaboration
Brand alignment & document design
Internal comms & residency program support
